A prolific writer, producer and director of film, stage plays, commercials and music videos and poetry, Messiah Equiano has: produced the ground breaking and inspirational documentary film entitled “nugget” which aims to increase the peace in Chicago.
He has also self published a powerful and insightful book of poetry entitled “Poetic Proclamations Of An Emancipated Slave, founded the nonprofit entity: Operation Safe Passage which has a mission of saving and inspiring the lives of Chicago’s youth through media productions, mentorship programs and scholarships.
He also wrote, produced, directed, and starred in the riveting stage play entitled “Dreams Deferred” which inspires viewers to be the change they wish to see in their communities. Since Fall 2009, Dreams Deferred has run 4 times to over 2,000 attendees.
He has also produced an educational and entertaining Black History production entitled “A History Lesson”. Since Spring 2010, A History Lesson has run 6 times to over 3,500 attendees. On February 17, 2012, 1,000 CPS students attended the production at The Harold Washington Cultural Center. There, students received free haircut and hairstyle certificates, free dinner certificates to Chicago’s Chicken and Waffles, and Morgan Park sophomore Shantierra Anderson won Chicago Bulls tickets.
Messiah has also written and directed a series of “Peace PSA’s” and The “Whenever I Do” music video.
He has spoken at several Chicago high schools for Career Day, mentored at Paul Robeson high school during the 2010-2011 school year and delivered the 2010 commencement address for Banner Alternative School’s graduation.
He’s also produced the captivating short film “A Test of Faith” which debuted during the 2011 Black Harvest Film Festival.
As of now, Messiah teaches filmmaking and media to 6 schools in Chicago. In addition to this, he has another stage play, “Love’s Hangover”, 2 more films “A Test of Faith 2” and “Roost”, and a television show in the works.
